The Game of You

"The one who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd.  The one who walks alone is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been." -- Albert Einstein

Our basketball team during my senior year of college was the best I've ever played on.  We ended up 30-2 and second in the country.  Something that became apparent to me during this season was how little we would spend prepping ourselves for other teams during practice and film relative to what we had done previously in my college career and also relative to how much time we spent improving our own systems.

While during my first two college seasons we would have long film sessions and thick scouting reports, a coaching change between my sophomore and junior year lead us to just minutes of film as a team and a single page scout.

The philosophy?  If we just focus on ourselves and play our game and run our systems to the best of our ability, we will win.

How much time do you spend during your day comparing what you do to what others do?  How much energy are you allocating to trying keep up with everybody else?
Maybe they are playing a different game than you.  Maybe you are giving them undue respect and playing down to their level.

Regardless, stop worrying about what everybody else is doing in their daily lives, their careers, their relationships.  Focus on being the best YOU, because YOU are good enough to win the game of YOUR life, your business is good enough to win the game of your business, but not if your focus is elsewhere and you are trying to play everybody else's game.

In what areas of your life do you need to bring the focus back on you?  Where do you feel like you are playing catch-up with those around you, never leading the pack but rather only reacting to everybody else's endeavors and accomplishments?

Learn from those who have come before you down a similar path.  Accept the responsibility of creating your own path.  Stop worrying about the path everybody else is on and the games they are playing.  Play the game of you to the best of your ability.

Expect greatness.
